Long
recognized as one of Cape Cod's most beautiful beaches, the
white sands of Old Silver Beach have been home to a rich history
of entertainment enterprises on the grounds now occupied by
the Sea Crest Resort. During the 1930's an elegant summer
playhouse featured aspiring actors who later became prominent
stars of stage and screen. Henry Fonda, Jimmy Stewart, Margaret
Sullavan and director Josh Logan were among the notables who
honed their skills on this stage. A fire in 1936 destroyed
the theater and the hurricane of 1938 swept the beach clean
of all structures. In 1942 Lou Walters opened the Latin Quarter,
a hotel and dinner theater, which soon became Cape Cod's favorite
nocturnal playground. Lou's daughter,celebrity interviewer
Barbara Walters, grew up on the sands of Old Silver Beach.
The property was expanded in 1962 and converted to a year-round
family resort in 1971. The Sea Crest, now managed by Finch
Hotels & Resorts, Inc.. continues to build its reputation
as one of New England's premier resorts, each year hosting
a growing number of visitors and conference attendees from
around the world, who seek out the charm of Cape Cod's beauty,
informal atmosphere and unhurried pace.
